In case anyone is interested, here is some information about
the system i am running with comments about the various hardware:
Processor : Intel Pentium II MMX - 306mhz (68mhz bus) 0.35micron
This processor is Intel, which means it's good, solid, fast. And
since it's 0.35micron it's HOT, i mean you can fry an egg inside
my computer. If you're buying a new computer, buy 333mhz
or better since they are 0.25micron and don't get as hot.
Display Adaptor : ATI Xpert@Work, Rage Pro, AGP, 4mb SGRAM.
ATI's 3D on the Rage Pro chipset is a joke, don't even think
of buying it for 3D. However, it's Hardware Motion Compensation
and ultra-fast Colorspace Conversion makes it the perfect card
for cheap DVD viewing.
Memory : 128mb SDRAM, 66mhz
With my oldish LX mainboard, you can forget about the newer 100mhz
memory dimms, but still, 128mb is nice for every application. Even though
Windows 98 goes down 25mb to swap file after a clean boot (my guess
is that it's standard microsoft practice to take up disk space).
Screen: OptiQuest 4000tc 17"
My old trusty and slightly dying monitor, so far it's been alive for
about 4 years, hopefully it will last till i get a 19" monitor.
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster 32+8mb 30pin SIMM ram.
Good old sound blaster. This baby is packing 8mb ram for extra
MIDI instruments (which i don't really use). Thing is, this card
is a bit old, and only support 44100hz playback rather than the
DVD 48000hz standard.
Sound System: Aiwa NSX-V700
This baby is a manufacturer's dream. 1 day after the warranty wore off,
the CD-Player dies. Being too lazy and poor to fix it, i never bothered.
Might aswell play CDs through the computer.
DVD-Rom drive: Hitachi GD-2500
Yes, finally to the DVD-Rom drive. At first i wanted to get the
Toshiba SD-M1202 5x drive, however the drive they shipped
me was banged in shipping, hard enough to dent the metal
casing.
And after that there were no more single drives in supply,
only DVD Kits (drives+decoder cards). So my next option
was to go with the Hitachi GD-2500.
While slightly slower than other 3rd generation DVD drives,
this drive has yet to give me any trouble and i have put
it through quite a bit of rigor, so i guess it's a winner
in my book.
